Establishment Clause
What is your understanding of the Establishment Clause? What was the framer's original understanding of the Establishment Clause? Do we want "a wall of separation between church and state"? Is such a wall even possible? How should the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause be reconciled?

I think people would use religion as an excuse even more so if we had it in government. I know their are some die hard religious people, who try to use God as an excuse to act apone their disires... I think it's better that we hav some form or wall...
I think people nowadays believe that there should be no religion involved in government at all. Considering all this politically correctness, having "In God we Trust" on our currency, steps on a lot of toes. The Framers saw it a different way I believe, they intended for the government to not establish a religion which the entire country had to follow. I believe there should be a wall, to prevent riots from breaking out. Personally, I believe in God, so I believe the wall does not need to be solidly brick.
I do not think that the kind of wall that is "necessary" these days will ever be accomplished, our government has ties with religion dating too far back. Also with the amount of control over everything the government of 2011 would like to impose upon us would never allow anyone to agree on what was nevessary.
There will always be a fine line to walk when it comes to involving religion in the government. I think the government should turn to religion for some choices, but we all have freedom of religion, so the government can not fairly decide to base their principles upon one religion.
religion should have nothing to do with politics but it always finds a way in anyways though it says the separation between church and state is needed though will probably never happen since most people base their decisions on religion
The purpose of the establishment clause is to separate church and state and prohibit an establishment of religion. I think the Framers interpreted this the way that it is written. They didn't want church and state to interfere with each other. I think it would be nice to have a wall between church and state, but the truth is, it's very unlikely that such a wall will ever exist. Everyones personal beliefs affect what they do, even government officials. I honestly don't think there will ever be a way to reconcile the Establishment clause and the Free Exercise clause.
Long ago, teachers us to pray at school in class with student in it. But now days they can do that because it's not fair to the other people who believe in god but in another religion like me
This is a hard subject because when the framers first established everything they all were one religion so it was ok to say "In God we Trust" but now with America having so many different cultures and religions its hard not to step on someones toes.
The Establishment Clause was made to separate church and state. I think the Framers interpreted it by how it was written. I think there should be a wall between church and state but then we should also consider religion in some decisions we make because there will never be a complete wall between the two.
I believe that religion should not be involved in the government but I do not think that it should discourage students beliefs and not let them wear crosses or pray in their free time
It was established to separate the Church and the State. So there was no religion in the government but somehow someones opinion gets in about how that is wrong and that's not what they believe so that is wrong so the government has to be like screw the dam people and just do it screw what people believe because it is not always for the best maybe that's why we are in so much dam debt and can't get out of it HMMMMM think about that
The Establishment Clause was made to separate church and state so that the government couldn't make a certain religion people had to follow. I believe we should have a wall between the two so that we are free to worship in our own way and the government can't interfere. A wall like this is unlikely ever to completely exist tho.
I think it's weird that the Americans have and Establishment clause. I always thought that Americans were really into religion. The Government created a wall of separation between church and state. This is according to me not necessary! As example: In Belgium we don't have it. I was kinda offend that we didn't have a free day on the 1st and 2nd of November. These days are really special for Catholic. Even if I'm not that religious I still think those days have a meaning. America sure is different on this subject.
I agree with everyone that even though the term "wall of separation of church and state" wasn't in the constitution doesn't mean it shouldn't apply. Everyone that does not think that, would be awful butthurt if it was anything but Christian. If muslims or buddhists or whatever wanted something people would say heck no, but if it fits their agenda then oh yeah. About the only thing that angers me with the establisment clause is the in god we trust thing on the money. It really enrages me. Why should I as an American who has the right to practice, or not practice for that matter, whatever I believe, or not believe, have to use Christian money. You guys say its not but xtians tend to have a monopoly on the term god instead of using his name Yhwh. /rant
"a wall between church and state" would be ideal for this country because we have so many different religions yet i don't think that a full separation will ever be possible because most people's religion is ground into them so much that they cannot help but show it
If our country had only one religion then the separation would not make sense but we are not like that
The reason that the establishment clause is here is to separate the church and state. Because the government isn't making everyone have a certain religion to follow you can choose which one you want to. Even tho the wall might not work as good as some people want it to I think it is good to have so you can choose and the government as no say on what you choose.
